Knoxville Hospital and Clinics did three active shooter and emergency lockdown procedure drills yesterday, using a strategy known as the ALICE plan.

ALICE encourages good cooperation with law enforcement and running, hiding, and fighting strategies to avoid casualties and eliminate the threat quickly. Hospital CEO Kevin Kincaid tells KNIA/KRLS News learning from law enforcement and practicing procedures made a difference from one session to the next. The morning session saw more than 30 simulated casualties, but after debriefing the session and trying again in the afternoon only two were killed before the threat was neutralized. Kincaid says the drill is a part of Knoxville Hospital and Clinics continuing commitment to the safety of the community and their patients. Hospital staff have practiced for mass casualty situations outside the hospital before, but Kincaid says preparing for the worst inside the facility is a good practice. The Knoxville Police Department, Marion County Sheriff’s Office, Marion County Conservation Board, Knoxville Fire & Rescue, and Marion County Emergency Management assisted the hospital with the drills.
