Pella Christian earned a sweep of PCM in a girls’-boys’ doubleheader heard live on KNIAKRLS.com.

The No. 9 in 2A Eagles girls pulled away with their pressure defense in a 59-38 win, and the boys dominated wire-to-wire in an 84-41 blowout against the Mustangs.

Game one started in a 12-12 tie, and PCM took their first lead at 17-14 in the 2nd quarter. At that point, for the second straight game, Pella Christian cranked up the press, which led to a 15-0 run and a big advantage they never let go of. In the second quarter alone, Emma Huisman and Mary Kate Bandstra combined for six steals.

Eagles Head Coach Kevin Van Maanen says they can’t become to reliant on their press, but he’s proud of how the team keeps finding ways to take control of games with different players.

Pella Christian was led by 14 points from Brooke Mitrisin, 12 from Kaley Wilson, and a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double for Isabella Baugh.

From the opening tip, Pella Christian’s boys controlled their matchup featuring two coaching greats. The Eagles dominated in all phases of the game and from downtown, in which the PC starters hit ten threes in roughly 16 minutes of playing time.

Eagles head coach Larry Hessing tells KNIA/KRLS Sports it was important to get the team’s confidence back and to clean up a few things they learned from Friday’s loss.

The Eagles were led by 16 points from Levi Jungling, 13 from Kenden Veenstra, and 12 from sharpshooter Graham Howerzyl, who was 4-of-5 from deep.

Pella Christian’s girls are 5-0, the boys are 2-1, and both remain off until a showdown with Pella Friday.

PCM’s girls and boys, each suffering their first losses of the season, travel to CMB for a conference doubleheader tonight. Find live coverage of those games on KNIAKRLS.com via the KNIA2 stream.
