Local speech students are advancing to state competition after earning Division I ratings at district competition this past weekend.

The Pella High School large group performers are advancing 71 students in 15 categories. Head Coach Suzi Jones tells KNIA/KRLS News it’s exciting to see so many students succeed in the arts. Pella Christian advanced seven of ten entries as well, including one act play and reader’s theatre.

Knoxville advanced an improv group, including students Asa Leonard, Quinlin Robuck, Shelby Isidore, Mary Keary, and Brooke Willardson. Pleasantville’s musical theatre, choral reading, radio news, and improv I all earned division I rating, and four entries from PCM are headed to state competition as well.

The Twin Cedars Improv group also received the highest rating possible. All local speech teams advancing will compete at the state contest on February 4th at Cedar Rapids Washington High School.

Prior to state, Pella and Pella Christian will host their annual All-City Speech Night on Tuesday, January 31st at 7 p.m. at Pella Christian High School, with a free-will donation benefiting speech programs at both schools.
