UPDATE: The three people involved in a fatal crash near Pella Friday evening were a group of firefighters heading to training in Ames.

James Franciskovich, 52, who was ejected and died as a result of injuries, served with the West Burlington Fire Department. Pella Fire plans to honor his memory at 10 a.m. today near their station as Franciskovich is moved to his final resting place.

The white Chevy truck involved was driven by fellow firefighter Carrie Ellen Falcon, also of Burlington, who was injured in the crash. Shane McCampbell, 25, of Burlington, is also a member of the department and was hurt in the rollover as well. Both were transported to Pella Regional Health Center by Pella Ambulance and released. The Iowa State Patrol says seatbelt use likely saved their lives.

Multiple emergency crews responded to numerous 911 calls at approximately 6:05 p.m. Friday evening for the white pickup that left the roadway near mile marker 46 in the westbound lanes of Highway 163. The truck came to a rest on its top in the north-side ditch.

Pella Ambulance, Pella Rural Fire, Pella Police, and the Mahaska County Sheriff’s Office all responded and assisted with the rescue. The Iowa State Patrol is investigating the cause, which has not been determined. Visibility was reduced due to blowing snow and Highway 163 was partially covered with snow and ice at the time, which police say may have been a factor.
