Funding of public schools has become another controversial topic across the state as lawmakers consider legislation involving a type of education savings account or voucher for students, where money that would normally flow into our public schools could potentially follow individual students throughout their student career.

The education savings accounts would potentially allow parents to enroll their student in either public or private school or help parents homeschool their child. Suzy Card with the Iowa State Education Association tells KNIA/KRLS News to fund the savings accounts or vouchers, the state would take money away from public schools. Approximately $6,500 per student goes to public schools now but that could be diverted to the vouchers if the proposed legislation were enacted.
