A new gun bill introduced last week that would bring a stand-your-ground provision as well other changes to current gun laws in Iowa was approved by a Republican led subcommittee this past Thursday.

State Representative Greg Heartsill tells KNIA/KRLS News the purpose of the new proposed bill is to better clarify what duty a person has to retreat if they feel their life is in danger. Other changes to current gun laws that the new bill targets is a removal of background check restrictions on private handgun purchases, allowing residents to carry concealed weapons without a permit, stop colleges from banning weapons on campus, allow firearm permits to last a lifetime, prohibit local governments from passing gun restrictions, allow children under age 14 to use handguns with supervision from parents and allow guns on the Capitol grounds.
