In the regular season finale for both clubs, the Pella Christian girls and boys basketball teams each rallied from fourth quarter deficits to beat Newton last night in a doubleheader heard live on 92.1 KRLS. The girls won 51-43 while the boys were victorious 68-62.

The Eagle girls jumped out a 9-0 lead to start the game, but found themselves trailing 35-33 after three quarters.

A pair of Kaley Wilson three-pointers and six points from Morgan Fopma sparked an 18-8 fourth quarter advantage for the Eagles.

Fopma and Brooke Mitrisin scored 12 points while Wilson added 11. Mary Kate Bandstra grabbed 9 rebounds as class 2-A #7 Pella Christian finishes the regular season with a 13-8 record and in 5th place in the Little Hawkeye Conference at 6-8.

The Eagle boys were down 39-28 at halftime as a potent Cardinal offensive attack nailed six first-half three-pointers and out-rebounded Pella Christian 20-11 to create several second chance opportunities.

David Kacmarynski took over in the third quarter, scoring 9 of his game high 20 points as the Eagles clawed within 51-46 with eight minutes to go.

That’s when Pella Christian’s defense took over, allowing just one field goal over the first 6:30 minutes of the fourth quarter, flipping the script on Newton to take control of the game.

In addition to his 20 points, Kac grabbed 12 rebounds, and his running mate Levi Jungling scored 18 points, giving him 1,513 for his career.

Pella Christian finishes in solo second place in the LHC at 10-4, and they wrap up the regular season at 17-4 overall.

Up next for both clubs is class 2-A tournament play next week, with opponents to be determined. The Eagle girls will host a game on Tuesday night, the boys host one on Thursday.
