A Burlington man was killed in a rollover crash Friday evening east of Pella.

The Iowa State Patrol confirms that James Lee Franciskovic, 52, of Burlington, died as a result of injuries suffered after the 2004 Chevy pickup he was riding in as a passenger left the roadway. He thrown from the vehicle, as police say Franciskovic was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the incident.

The truck was driven by Carrie Ellen Falcon, also of Burlington, who was injured in the crash. Shane McCampbell, 25, of Burlington was injured in the rollover as well. Both were transported to Pella Regional Health Center by Pella Ambulance. The Iowa State Patrol says seatbelt use likely saved their lives.

Multiple emergency crews responded to numerous 911 calls at approximately 6:05 p.m. Friday evening for the white pickup that left the roadway near mile marker 46 in the westbound lanes of Highway 163. The truck came to a rest on its top in the north-side ditch.

Pella Ambulance, Pella Rural Fire, Pella Police, and the Mahaska County Sheriff’s Office all responded and assisted with the rescue. The Iowa State Patrol is investigating the cause, which has not been determined. Visibility was reduced due to blowing snow and Highway 163 was partially covered with snow and ice at the time, which police say may have been a factor.
