Central College Marking 50 Years Since MLK Spoke on Campus

This week, Central College is remembering Martin Luther King, Jr’s visit to campus fifty years ago with a series of lectures and a dedication ceremony.

Assistant Dean of Students T. Todd Masman tells KNIA/KRLS News that NAACP Environmental and Climate Justice Program director Jacqui Patterson will be in residence and her address, “Dr. King’s Beloved Community,” is free and open to the public at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Upper Chapel.

Project manager and historical researcher for the Iowa Civil Rights Trails Project Charles Pearson will also present a community event at Central, which begins at 7 p.m. tomorrow in Maytag Student Center’s van Emmerik Studio.

On Wednesday at noon, Central will dedicate a new display commemorating King’s visit to campus. In 1967, King urged more than 1,300 listeners in Central’s gymnasium to believe that positive change — and progress toward social equality — can occur through collective action and courageous individuals.
