As the girls tournament pushes along this week, the Pella Christian and Pella boys’ teams are working for what they hope is a deep run in their respective classes at Wells Fargo Arena.

Pella Christian has a regular season rematch to begin their third straight trip to the 2A state tournament when they take on Van Meter to open the day Tuesday. The Eagles defeated the Bulldogs on the road in a 61-53 game on February 4th.

Head Coach Larry Hessing says it’s been rare for Pella Christian to see an opponent again at state when he’s been leading the program. Van Meter is 23-1 and making their first stop at the championship tournament in over 80 years. The two square off Tuesday at 10:30 a.m.

Pella’s boys will have an unfamiliar foe when they take on No. 6 seed Sergeant Bluff-Luton later that same evening. Head Coach Mark Core says the Warriors bring a great deal of balance to the floor.

The 15-9 Warriors beat Sioux City Heelan 53-51 to qualify just two weeks after falling by 15 to the Crusaders two weeks prior. Sergeant Bluff lost to fellow state qualifier Western Christian in the regular season.

Pella begins their tournament journey Tuesday at 8:15. Follow wire-to-wire coverage of Pella and Pella Christian’s trips to state next week on 92.1 KRLS.
