Today is Iowa State Flag Day across the state, which was proclaimed by Governor Terry Branstad.

Knoxville will have celebrations throughout the day that include the raising of the flag at 10 a.m., a speech given by renowned Iowa author Michael Chapman at 1 p.m., and a family carnival from 4 to 6 p.m. There will also be tours given of Dixie Cornell Gebhardt’s home, as well as visits to her gravesite and a viewing of her portrait at the Marion County Courthouse. Roslin Thompson, Director of the Knoxville Public Library tells KNIA/KRLS News Representative Greg Heartsill and his wife Angie designed a passport that residents can receive at different locations. The passport will then be marked off at each celebration and added to a drawing when completed, for a chance to win a $50 gift basket. The celebrations mark the 100th anniversary of the design of the flag and the 96th anniversary of its adoption as the state flag.
