It’s not surprising the Tulip City will be well represented at one of the biggest track and field events in the world this weekend in Des Moines.

Pella and Pella Christian are sending athletes to the 108th Drake Relays at the famous Blue Oval Thursday through Saturday.

The Lady Dutch squad with 3A championship aspirations next month is sending one of the largest groups to Drake in the state among high schools, with ten events featuring athletes in green.

Annika Pingel and Emily Vos are racing in separate heats of the 100 meters, Future Drake Bulldog Emma Thoreson is in the 100 meter hurdles, Central-bound Kiki Pingel will compete in the 400 meter hurdles, Emily Holterhaus is in the high jump, Paighton Malek will long jump, and Kaeleigh DeWaard is in the shotput, as well as 4×100, 4×200, 4×400, and sprint medley relay units.

Pella Christian’s girls will be represented by their 4×100 meter team and four-time discus state qualifier Lizzy Van Manen. She tells KNIA/KRLS Sports last year’s toss was her first time at the Relays, and that she aims to be better prepared for the experience this week.

For the boys, Tyson Waasenaar of Pella will be the lone Dutch representative. The 108th Drake Relays will feature numerous Marion County athletes this Thursday through Saturday in Des Moines.
