Day two of the Iowa High School state track and field meet featured some top finishes for Marion County athletes at Drake Stadium Friday.

The Pella Lady Dutch remain in the class 3A mix in a competitive field, scoring 30 team points through ten finals thus far. They trail Assumption at 37 and Decorah at 31.

One event earned the Lady Dutch 11 of those, as Kiki Pingel placed 3rd and Emily Holterhaus 4th in the 400 meter hurdles.

Pella also received a significant contribution from 3rd-place shot put thrower Kaeleigh DeWaard with a personal record 39-06.75. She tells KNIA/KRLS Sports she instantly knew the throw was a good one.

The Lady Dutch also nabbed a 3rd place spot in the 4×200 meter finals. Sprinter Metje Miller says it’s nice to get points with a tough field in place vying for the 3A title, and the girls are ready to hit their best times of the year.

Pella Christian’s Elizabeth Van Manen had the highest finished among local teams, earning 2nd place with a discus toss of 132-02, just a foot away from a state title. Knoxville’s Katie Keitges ran a stellar final leg to earn the Panthers a 7th place finish in the distance medley relay. PCM’s distance medley squad earned an 8th place finish. One of the best races of the day belonged to Avery Van Zee. The junior was able to pull a 3rd place finish in the 400 meter hurdles in only his fifth attempt at the race this year.

Tune into KNIA/KRLS throughout the day to hear live updates from the famous Blue Oval.
