Central College’s softball season is over after the Dutch were beaten 2-1 by Washington University Saturday afternoon in an elimination game at the Pella Regional as heard live on 92.1 KRLS.

The Bears broke in front with two unearned runs in the third, and Central quickly bounced back with a fourth inning tally when Kendra Sexton scored on a Paige Dickel sacrifice fly.

But the Dutch, despite chances in both the fifth and sixth innings, couldn’t get back even or pull ahead.

Coach George Wares credits the Bears for playing a solid game, and knows his club left some opportunities out on the field.

“We had a chance to tie on the double steal (in the fifth), which we’ve done a lot but it didn’t work. Then I thought Dickel’s (pop out in the sixth) might bloop in and we could have scored two there. But I’m really happy with what our pitchers did, all three of them. Uncharacteristically, we made a couple of blunders defensive, and that got it open for their two runs. That was the difference.”

Central’s season comes to a close at with a 32-10 record. Wash U was eliminated by Coe immediately afterwards, 2-1, and the Kohawks then saw their season come to an end yesterday, 12-8 against St. Thomas.

The Tommies will play a Super Regional next weekend at St. Cate’s of Minnesota, who beat Luther twice yesterday to advance.
