Grace Held score the first and only goal of the game two minutes into overtime, lifting the second-ranked Pella High girls soccer team past Newton last night, 1-0.

The Lady Dutch outshot the Cardinals 29-7, put 15 shots on goal compared to Newton’s five, and possessed the ball for nearly two-thirds of the game.

But it took Held’s unassisted goal, officially 2:29 into overtime, to send tenth-ranked Newton to its first loss of the season and give Pella control of the Little Hawkeye Conference race.

The Lady Dutch are 11-1 on the season and 4-0 in LHC play. After enjoying time off for Tulip Time, they’ll return to action next Monday at the Pella Soccer Complex against Oskaloosa.

Meanwhile, the Pella boys, who were supposed to play last night at Winterset, had that match postponed to tonight. It’s varsity only with a 6:00 start in Winterset.
