Knoxville School Board Member Mike Helle has resigned after recently posting a message on Facebook suggesting President Trump be assassinated. The quote reads, “Trump (Twitter) needs to be neutralized. Trump needs to take in a show at Ford’s Theater.”

In an email at 10:08 last night, the following statement from Helle was emailed to School Board President Andrew Schmidt, Board Secretary Craig Mobley, and Superintendent Cassi Pearson.

“I feel it is in the best interest of the Knoxville School District if I resign from the Knoxville School Board immediately. I have enjoyed my 12 years on the board and I know that we have accomplished many positive things.”

Helle tells KNIA/KRLS News “…I have enjoyed serving on the board…and I know a lot of great things were done by all involved. Knoxville is lucky to have outstanding people who work for the school district. I don’t want to be a distraction because there is much heavy lifting left to do. If I could share one important thought with all of your listeners it would be to be careful of what you post online because one comment taken out of a string of back and forth post(s) can and will be taken out of context.”

The Knoxville Police Department has confirmed they have been in touch with Secret Service agents regarding the comments made by Helle. The next regular school board meeting will be held Monday, May 22. At that time, the board will discuss the process for filling the vacant seat.
