The 14th-ranked class 1-A Pella Christian girls soccer team edged #15 in class 2-A Newton last night, 1-0, allowing Pella Christian to tie the school record for most victories in a season.
The only goal of the game came in the 24th minute, when Lindsay Breon found a streaking Laura DeZwarte, who put the ball in the back of the net.
Coach Mike Buccheit had the following quote for KNIA/KRLS Sports after the match –
“The character and poise with which this team played tonight was impressive. The girls set a single season record with their seventh shutout, tied the school record of 11 wins (tying the 2002 and 2009 teams), beat a ranked team for the first time in recent history, set a record for most wins in the LHC, and still have two more regular season games to play.”
With eight wins in their last nine matches, Pella Christian is 11-4, 3-3 in the league. They’ll wrap up Little Hawkeye Conference play next Tuesday with a home match against Oskaloosa, then close out the regular season two nights later with another home contest against Des Moines Christian.
