The Pella High softball team went 1-2 Saturday at the Centerville tournament.

The Lady Dutch lost the opener to Carlisle 8-1 in the first game of the day, bounced back to beat Moulton-Udell 12-0, then lost to Central Lee 7-6.

In the win over Moulton-Udell, Kinzi Van Wyk allowed just two hits and two walks while pitching the four inning shutout and Maddie Parks was two-for-two with a walk, two RBI and a stolen base.

In the setback to Central Lee, Ally Almond went two-for-three with her second home run of the season and three RBI.

Pella finishes the first week of the season at 2-3. Coach Robin Llewellyn says that with no seniors on this years’ team, she’s starting to see several underclassmen emerge as leaders in the early part of the year.

“We’ve got a great group of juniors this year. We’ve got Destiny Brown and Sabrina Tallman and Kinzi Van Wky, all of who have varsity experience from last year. We also have a great group of sophomores, many of who have varsity starting experience from last year. They play like they’re upperclassmen and they talk and they lead like they’re upperclassmen.”

This young version of the Lady Dutch will return to the diamond Tuesday at Colfax-Mingo on Tuesday, then on Wednesday they’ll play their first Little Hawkeye Conference game of the season at home against Pella Christian.
