Construction of the powerhouse at the Lake Red Rock dam

An Independent External Peer Review (IEPR) Panel conducted the third Safety Assurance Review of construction work at the Red Rock Hydroelectric Project, and issued a favorable report.

The four-member panel of experts was at the project site on the Des Moines River to review reports, tour the facilities, observe construction activities, and examine various construction elements earlier this spring. Safety Assurance Reviews of hydroelectric projects are required by the Water Resource Development Act of 2007. The favorable report by the IEPR Panel affirms that work can proceed as scheduled at the Red Rock Hydroelectric Project. Work began in August 2014 and is expected to be completed late next year. When complete, the project will produce enough energy to meet the needs of about 18,000 homes.

In its report, the IEPR Panel stated, “In general, the Panel is favorably impressed with the construction thus far. The quality of the work by the contractor and the control of the construction being maintained by MWH and the owner are commendable.” The Panel further noted, “It is the opinion of the IEPR that the MWH team, together with the contractor’s means and methods, are working together to achieve successful construction of this project.”
