In the spring of 2016, the Central College football team used its allotted spring practices to lay the groundwork for a new fast-paced offense that was unleashed on Iowa Conferences defenses in the fall.

Coach Jeff McMartin says that there were no such secret weapons being tested this spring, rather it was back to the basics and working on getting better.

“You’re trying to teach the fundamentals and skill, and you’re also trying to relearn plays. We got a look at some guys in different positions to see if they have the motor skills to do those things, so getting reps became very important.”

The Iowa Conference allows for 16 spring practices, and McMartin says that they used 14 of them, which he feels is a good number.

The Dutch have 33 seniors coming back on the 2017 squad, including fifth-year players, and there are high expectations for team that went 8-2 in 2016.

You can hear a full conversation with McMartin about spring practice, the outlook for 2017, his role on the American Football Coaches Association Board and more as he joins Trevor Castle Monday night on the Central College Radio Coaches Corner at 6:00 on 92.1 KRLS.
