Nobody was injured when a home in Leighton filled with smoke Monday evening.
Pella Rural Firefighters responded to the house on the 300 Block of Reid Street after 7:30 p.m.
Pella Fire Captain Randy Bogaard tells KNIA/KRLS News smoke damage was the primary result, with a small hole burnt into the floor of the living room and no other structural damage reported. He says the fire originated in a mechanical room on the basement floor, and that the fire created a lot of black smoke, but no visible flames. He says firefighters encountered dangerous heat in the basement, and was one of the hottest scenes he’s encountered for some time. MidAmerican Energy responded to help shut power off.
One man was inside the home and his wife was outside watering plants, and both were able to get out safely.
Pella Ambulance and the Mahaska County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene.
