Both Pella and Pella Christian saw their girls soccer seasons come to a close last night one match short of the state tournament.

Pella, ranked first in class 2-A, lost 2-1 to 15th-ranked Newton, while ninth-ranked class 1-A Pella Christian lost 3-0 to number seven Center Point Urbana.

The Lady Dutch fell behind early 1-0 before Maddie Canfield chased a loose ball into the back of the net ten minutes into the second half. Neither team scored for the remainder of regulation, or in either overtime, and the Cardinals won 3-1 in penalty kicks.

Pella Coach Mark Howard says that while his team did have chances, they were maybe a little too one-dimensional in the middle of the field.

“When we’re at our best, we keep the ball on the ground, pass crisp to feet, get the ball wide and get some crosses. Then Grace (Held) usually gets through on one, maybe two, each game. Hats off to the Cardinal defense as they kind of shut her down. I wish it would have went the other way, but it didn’t.”

Pella finishes the season at 16-2, while Newton advances to the 2-A state tournament.

Pella Christian’s record breaking season finishes at 15-5. The Stormin’ Pointers jumped up 2-0 at halftime and outshot the Eagles 10-1 en route to the victory.

After winning just 11 games total in the previous two seasons, the Eagles set school records this spring for victories (15), shutouts (8) and longest winning streak (8).
