Central College has named all-Iowa Conference women’s soccer honoree Sydney Lunardi as its nominee for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award.

The NCAA Woman of the Year program honors the academic achievements, athletics excellence, community service and leadership of graduating female college athlete.

Each conference office reviews nominations from its member schools and submits its league nominee to the NCAA’s selection committee. The committee chooses the top 30 nationally—10 from each division—and then three finalists from each division are picked.

The Committee on Women’s Athletics then selects the winner, announced at a banquet in Indianapolis in October.

A biochemistry major, Lunardi graduated cum laude and she has been accepted to graduate school at Drake University, where she will pursue an advanced degree in Pharmacy.

While at Central, Lunardi conducted an independent service learning project at the Pella Cottages, an assisted living and skilled nursing community. She also assisted with Laps of Love, an organization that made blankets and delivered them to nursing homes.

A four-year letterwinner at goalkeeper for the Dutch, Lunardi was twice named to the all-conference first team, once to the second team and was honorable mention this past fall. She also bagged third team NSCAAA All-North Region honors in 2015. She was team MVP and co-captain in 2015 and 2016.

Lunardi compiled a career record of 39-19-7, while registering 18 shutouts between the pipes, both school records. She also holds school records for goals against average in a season and in a career. The Dutch also had 12 victories with her in the net in 2016 for a school record.
