Tyler Hillman’s pitching and a big hit by Landon Vander Leest led the Pella High baseball team to a 3-1 win over North Polk last night.

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Vander Leest stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs. He hit a fly ball that chased the center fielder backwards and glanced off his glove for a three-run double.

That was enough for Hillman, a four year starter who was one of three seniors honored earlier in the evening. He allowed just one run on three hits with a walk and three strikeouts in a complete game effort.

“We’ve just been building up and getting a lot of momentum since Monday with a tough game”, Hillman said. “It’s gotten a little better every night, and tonight we put it all together. We played a really solid team in North Polk and we came out and played a really good game. I pitched well, and we played good defense and swung the bats well.”

With the win, Pella improves to 20-15 on the season. They’ll host Perry Monday before wrapping up the regular season on Tuesday at ADM and then starting postseason play on Friday against Knoxville.
