One person has been seriously injured after slamming into the back of a pickup truck on Highway T-17 earlier today.

Numerous agencies responded to calls of a collision between a motorcycle and white pickup truck at the intersection of T-17 and Jesup Drive at 11:40 a.m.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office reports that the driver of the truck was heading northbound and attempting to turn left onto Jesup. The Clay Township Fire Department says one of their own, Zachary LeGrande Greene, was the motorcyclist involved. As the pickup eased into his turn, the driver let off the brakes, and responding officers say Greene did not see the truck and hit the rear end. The operator was wearing a helmet, but it came off with the initial impact, and the motorcyclist was flung up, hit, and shattered the back window pane of the white truck, according to the deputy’s preliminary report.

Pella Ambulance responded and transported the operator to Pella Regional Health Center, where he was then flown to a Des Moines area hospital in critical condition, while the driver of the truck was not injured. Family members say Greene suffered numerous broken bones in his leg and one of his hands.

The Pella Rural Fire Department and Pella Police Department came to the scene to assist with traffic control and cleanup. The Marion County Sheriff’s Office says the incident was accidental in nature, and no charges will be filed at this time.
