Today we continue the countdown of the Top 10 sports stories of the 2016-2017 school year at Central College with number three.

206 plays. 1,198 yards. 60-plus minutes. And it all came down to one go-for-it all play for the Central College football team in its season opener on September 3rd.

Kole Helle’s dive inside of the front right pylon on a two-point conversion in overtime sealed a 50-49 victory for the Dutch over 19th-ranked Whitworth University.

Central had a chance to win in regulation, but Aaron Marcellus’ 32-yard field goal wobbled wide right. After the Pirates scored easily on the opening possession of OT, the Dutch answered with a Nate Bolland 9-yard strike to Sam Markham. Helle did the rest.

Markham, who was shutout in the first half, finished the game with 9 grabs for 87 yards and a pair of touchdowns – setting the tone for what would become a record breaking season.

Central finished the 2016 campaign with a record of 8-2 and went 6-2 in the Iowa Conference.
