In a pair of loaded fields, the Pella High girls’ and boys’ cross country teams were competitive at Saturday’s 12th annual Heartland Classic on the Iowa State course. The Lady Dutch finished 22nd with a team score of 483. The top two finishers for Pella were less than three seconds apart; Caroline McMartin was 38th overall and Annika Pingel came in 40th. Dallas Center-Grimes, the only other Little Hawkeye Conference school in attendance, placed 20th as a team.
The Little Dutch wound up 30th as a team with 820 total points. Pella’s lone finisher in the top 100 was Thomas Tauley, who crossed the line in 52nd with a 17:19.3 time. Indianola was the lone league school that joined the Dutch, and they were 23rd overall.
Saturday’s meet consisted of some of the best schools and runners in a six-state region.
