The No. 1 Pella Football team plans to have their hands full when they travel to Grimes to take on a Little Hawkeye Conference rival in the final non-district game of the season.

The Little Dutch are set to take on a 1-0 Dallas Center-Grimes that had little trouble with A-D-M in a week one 35-0 win.

Experience will be a big difference between the two teams, as the senior heavy Mustangs return 14 starters from a year ago, including starting quarterback Damon Clapper. Pella Head Coach Jay McKInstrey says keeping him and his athletic partner in the backfield Tanner Epple from the open field will be a key factor in tonight’s game.

“Damon Clapper is a heck of a runner and he’s tough,” McKinstrey says. “We watched him last year at our home field in 2016 and in that season watched some of the runs he made. We’re going to have to tackle him because he’s hard to get down–he’s a very, very good runner and he’s got a lot of experience there.”

“Their tailback is very good, [Epple] is very explosive and very fast, and if he gets to the open field and we don’t use our leverage to get him down, we’re going to have some problems tonight.”

Pella takes their 42 game winning streak into Grimes at 7:30, with pregame coverage beginning at 7 p.m. on the KRLS2 stream at, with Andrew Schneider and Randy Sikkema calling the action.
