Central College will begin a $2.2 million renovation of its historic Douwstra Auditorium in December, with the aim of transforming the local landmark into a regional performing arts center.

Director of Advancement Sunny Eighmy tells KNIA/KRLS News private donors have provided the financing in lead gifts toward constructing the space, including $1.2 million from the Jim and Bea Hoekstra Estate.

President Mark Putnam says Douwstra Auditorium has been the heart of Central’s campus since 1939 and a gathering place for music, the arts, conferences and guest speakers.

The college is determined to maintain the historic building but also meet the needs of a modern-day venue. Renovation begins after students leave for classes in the winter, with the first part of the project expected to be complete by the end of spring semester.
