Drivers heading into Pella on Highway G-28 and Washington Street are reminded to slow down as construction ramps up at the expansion of turn lanes at one of Pella’s busiest intersections.

At this week’s Pella City Council meeting, Public Works Director Denny Buyert discussed the excessive speeds construction crews have seen from drivers heading into town near the Washington Street-Highway 163 interchange.

The Pella Police Department and Public Works Department are working on additional enforcement or signage in the area for the speed zone that is 35 miles per hour. Buyert says they want to expand the turn lanes without having to close any portion of Washington Street from West 16th to West 15th.

TK Concrete is working on the $550,000 project, with $200,000 of those costs covered by the Iowa Department of Transportation. The expansion of the lanes and paving is set to be complete by December, and traffic lights will be installed early next spring, with the goal of completion by Tulip Time.
