Following regular business at this week’s Pella City Council meeting, discussion was held to potentially allow brewpubs in the zoning code.

City Administrator Mike Nardini tells KNIA/KRLS News the council was approached by the PACE Alliance to find ways to attract more visitors in Pella with establishments that would include food and beer.

“With this request, what it’s intended to do is create a destination restaurant that would be unique to Pella and draw visitors to the downtown,” he says. “So when we talk about currently, the concept of a brewpub–which is a combination of restaurant and also is an accessory use of manufacturing beer or alcohol, currently that’s not permitted under city code.”

Nardini says a potential ordinance was drafted for council to review at this week’s meeting, which would allow brewpubs in commercial zoning districts, as well as the possibility of their use in the downtown business district, limited in number and scope by access to special use permits issued by the Board of Adjustment.

The council will proceed with moving the ordinance to the Planning and Zoning Commission for further discussion.
