Families across the country will hit the road today in one of the busiest travel days of the year.

As residents in Knoxville head out to take part in their holiday festivities the Knoxville Police Department reminds them of ways to keep their homes safe while they are away. Lt. Aaron Fuller tells KNIA/KRLS News anyone leaving should not post to social media the dates and times they are leaving and returning especially if their security settings are low. He says residents should speak to their neighbors and ask them to keep an eye on their home while they are away. Lt. Fuller also recommends leaving a light on in the home to simulate someone home. Lt. Fuller adds homeowners can also call the Knoxville Police Department and ask for extra patrols to pass by their residence while they are away.
