Pella’s basketball teams head in different directions for non-conference action tonight.

The 10th-ranked Lady Dutch take their 1-0 record to North Polk, while the Little Dutch stay home to play Gilbert.

It’s the season opener for the boys, who have had their full squad together for practice for less than a week after a run to the state football playoffs. Coach Derek Schulte says he’s not going to let that stop his team from giving it everything they’ve got tonight.

“We’re going to come out and compete really hard and we’re going to play together and we’re going to be great teammates and take care of all of the things that we can control. Hopefully you’re going to see a team that defends hard and that has the ability to get out and run in transition and be explosive in that way. We’re also realistic that it’s game one and we’ve only practiced for a week. It could be a little interesting. Our job is to figure out how we overcome adversity. This is going to be a good early season test because we want to be a no excuses program.”

Tonight’s varsity boys game is scheduled to tip at 7:45 at Pella High School. The girl’s varsity game will get underway at 7:30 in Alleman.
