Dangerous, arctic air is settling in to ring in the new year.

A Wind Chill Warning is in place through Tuesday morning. According to the National Weather Service, lows this weekend will bottom out between 10 and 20 below zero in the overnight and early morning hours. Wind chill values will dip to as low as 35 below, especially on Monday morning. Daytime high temperatures will struggle to reach zero.

Officials remind all residents to use caution when going outside, as frostbite can occur in as little as 15 minutes in these conditions. They are also encouraged to wear multiple layers of dry clothing if they have to be outdoors, as wet clothes increase the risk of hypothermia. Other precautions include having a full tank of gas in automobiles, keeping cell phones charged for traveling, and having a winter safety kit readily available in a vehicle. This weekend’s cold air is not only dangerous for people.

Dr. Tim Yoder with Tri County Veterinary Clinic reminds all residents to keep their pets safe in chilly conditions by providing adequate, warm shelter and plenty of food to outdoor pets, and to keep them inside whenever possible.
