Both schools earned a win as the boys and girls basketball teams of local rivals collided in Monroe Monday night.

Pella Christian’s girls toppled PCM 61-50, and the Mustangs boys held off the Eagles 63-57 in a doubleheader heard live on 92.1 KRLS.

The Eagles girls pulled ahead with seven three-pointers in the first half and kept a slight advantage until they pulled away from PCM after they committed 29 turnovers in the game. Pella Christian Head Coach Kevin Van Maanen tells KNIA/KRLS Sports he continues to be impressed with his team’s defensive ability.

“I thought the first quarter was a great quarter for us, I thought the second wasn’t nearly as good, I thought we weren’t as sharp defensively and offensively,” he says. “But we talked about it at halftime and corrected some things and I thought we made some adjustments in our press and really started turning them over late in the third.”

Morgan Fopma finished with 11 points and 15 rebounds, ten of which came off the offensive glass, Kaley Wilson hit four from beyond-the-arc to score 18 points as well as nabbed five steals, and Isabella Baugh scored 12 points. Mara Juffer scored seven and stole three possessions in her second start relieving the injured Mary-Kate Bandstra. Regan Freland led the Mustangs with 21 points and five pickpockets of her own.

Pella Christian is now 4-1, the Mustangs fall to 2-2.

The boys game was close through three quarters, as both teams traded pivotal buckets, but it was the PCM bench that pushed them ahead of their rivals from Eagle Lane in the early 4th quarter. Eagles Head Coach Fred Lorensen tells KNIA/KRLS Sports the crucial run allowed them to make a few mistakes late and still hang on to their lead.

“We brought our second group in with about a minute left in the 3rd quarter, and thought we get them in a couple minutes, but they were playing so good we couldn’t take them out,” he says.

Head Coach Larry Hessing says in that stretch, PCM swung three possessions in their favor after Pella Christian missed the front end of three one-and-one opportunities.

Elijah Sperfslage led the Mustangs with 13 points, with Reid Worth and Andrew Van Ryswyk each adding 12. Pella Christian was led by an 11-point, 10 rebound double-double from Alex Huisman and Dan Jungling knocked down three from beyond-the-arc to add 11 of his own.

The 2-0 Mustangs join the girls tonight in Roland-Story for a boys-girls Heart of Iowa Conference doubleheader, which can be heard live on KNIA2 at kniakrls.com. The 0-3 Eagles will travel crosstown with the girls to take on Pella Friday night.
