It was a pair of blowouts to begin the Little Hawkeye Conference season for the Pella boys and girls basketball teams, with the boys earning a 62-41 victory and the girls falling 72-39 in a doubleheader heard live on 92.1 KRLS.

Pella’s boys opened the first and second quarters with a 7-0 and 10-0 run to pull away and keep Grinnell behind in double digits for the entire contest. Head Coach Derek Schulte was impressed with his team’s defense creating transition points and the play of his guards and their ability to produce points with passing.

Pella was led by 13 points from both Ryan Gustafson and Landon Vander Leest, as well as 12 points and three steals from Logan Shetterly. The Little Dutch are 2-0 and 1-0 in the conference.

The Lady Dutch were outpaced by the high-octane Grinnell girls in their loss, with the Tigers controlling all phases of the game.

Head Coach Jerod Garland says Grinnell will present a lot of problems for opposing teams throughout the season, and he was impressed with his team’s willingness to keep fighting despite the difficulty of their foe. The Lady Dutch were paced by a double-double of 12 points and 10 boards for Emily Holterhaus.

Pella’s girls are 1-2. Both Dutch basketball teams return home Tuesday against Ballard in non-conference action.
