Pella Christian’s girls routed Oskaloosa last night, 66-21, while the Eagle boys dropped a 64-46 decision to the Indians in a doubleheader heard live on our KRLS2 stream at www.kniakrls.com.

The girls game was tied at two when Pella Christian forced turnovers on nine straight Oskaloosa possessions en route to a 17-0 run that that put the game on ice.

Coach Kevin Van Maanen was a little worried his girls would come out sloppy last night, but it was just the opposite, as their well-executed press keyed the early run.

“When you score and take good shots and put the ball in the hoop, that helps. We didn’t rush shots to allow them to rebound. We had good shots, got our press set up, and did a nice job not allowing them to throw ahead. We flustered them a little bit, got our hands in the passing lanes, did a nice job of trapping and got the steals.”

Pella Christian forced 26 turnovers on the night, as they led 25-8 at the end of the first quarter and 50-15 at halftime to put running clock into effect.

Kaley Wilson’s 21 points were a game high, and Morgan Fopma added 15 points and six rebounds.

In the boys game, Pella Christian kept it close for much of the first half, but an 11-0 Indian surge late in the second quarter was the difference.

The Eagles struggled against Osky big men Cole Henry and Jared Kruse, who each scored 17 points and grabbed double digit rebounds. Pella Christian’s Josh Van Gorp led the way with 10 points and six boards.

The Eagles fall to 0-2 on the season and start Little Hawkeye Conference play at 0-1. P.C.’s girls are 3-1 and 1-0. Both teams will head to Monroe on Monday night to take on PCM in a doubleheader you’ll be able to hear live on 92.1 KRLS.
