Pella hits the road to Grinnell tonight to take on the Tigers for their first of 14 Little Hawkeye Conference doubleheaders in what promises to be another grueling slate of games this season.

The girls game features a pair of ranked teams, as Grinnell is 2-0 and ranked fourth in class 4-A, while Pella dropped three notches to 13th and is 1-1.

On the boys’ side, the Little Dutch won their season opener for new head Coach Derek Schulte earlier this week over Gilbert, and Grinnell dropped a close decision to South Tama.

Schulte knows how important, and tough, the LHC is, and says that they hope to be very competitive in the league and in the state.

“Long term, our vision for the program is to compete for championships, and also make a difference in our community. We want to have kids who give back to our community. Short term, we’re more about a process and we’ll actually have game goals that will be our focus. If we reach our game goals, we’re pretty confident the result will be in our favor.”

Action starts tonight at 6:15 at Grinnell High School, with the top-15 girls’ showdown opening the festivities. Andrew Schneider and Mike Buchheit will have the live play-by-play on 92.1 KRLS.
