If the Pella Christian boys basketball team aims to make a push to their 4th straight trip to Wells Fargo Arena, the road may be more difficult if they start slow out of the winter break.

Head Coach Larry Hessing says last year, the Iowa High School Athletic Association implemented new rules for playoff seeding that include coaches selecting the brackets and seeds.

He says despite their 2-6 start, they may still earn a higher spot based on their tough schedule, but he believes the process is largely out of the team’s hands.

“It’s not based solely on record, it’s a coaches’ consensus. So obviously a good record helps, but most coaches, based on our experience last year, recognize the quality of schedules against wins and losses. Some of those things are a little bit out of our control depending on how we’re grouped by the state association, so we’ll just do the best we can, and when those groupings and pairings come out, we’ll just have to roll with it.”

The boys travel to Grinnell when they return to action Friday, with five games total between January 5th and the 15th.
