A hearing has been scheduled for Thursday, January 25th in the Bill Carter vs. Jason Carter civil trial following motions from the lawyers for Jason Carter.

According to court documents the motions filed were to stay the execution of the verdict, overturn or reduce the punitive damages and exempt garnishment funds.

On December 15th, a jury found Jason Carter liable in a unanimous decision for the 2015 death of his mother, Shirley Carter. The jury awarded husband Bill Carter, Bill Carter Jr. and Shirley’s estate $10,250,002. The awards were $250,000 for physical and emotional pain to Shirley, $1 to Bill Carter her husband, $1 to son Bill Jr., and $10,000,000 in punitive damages.

Lawyers for Jason Carter are asking the $10,000,000 punitive damages to be reduced to $1,000,000 as well as for a stay in the execution of the verdict until ruling on the motions for judgement withstanding verdict and motion for new trial can be made. They also ask that $1,000 of Jason Carter’s funds in bank accounts be protected from garnishment.

Jason Carter is currently out on bond after being charged with the first degree murder of this mother Shirley on December 17th two days after the verdict in the civil trial was announced.
