One person has died from injuries suffered in a single vehicle crash near the intersection of Shaw Street and Highway T-17 near Bussey early Sunday morning.

Connie Jo Galbraith, 62, was found by police pinned between the dashboard and driver’s seat of a pickup truck, and later died at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines.

According to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, Deputy Isaac Short notified Marion County dispatch of a single vehicle accident near the intersection at 1:04 a.m. Deputy Short was on routine patrol traveling north when he noticed a red light down in a ravine within a wooded area. Believing it to be a vehicle, Deputy Short turned around and notified dispatch that he would be out of his patrol SUV to check on the scene. Deputy Short found a pickup and saw the front of the truck was resting against a tree, and immediately requested rescue to the scene. Bussey Fire and EMS, Knoxville Township Fire Department and Pella Ambulance were paged to the scene.

Galbraith was found with injuries to her leg and a laceration on her forehead. Upon arrival at scene, rescue personnel requested additional assistance be paged for extrication purposes as well as Mercy Air due to the nature of injuries. She was flown to Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, where she later succumbed to her injuries.

The accident remains under investigation.
