The Tulip City Basketball teams will clash for the second time this season as Pella travels to Eagle Lane for a varsity doubleheader this evening.

Pella swept the Eagles when the teams first met on December 8th. The Lady Dutch and Eagles girls will kick off the twin bill and look to settle the score after 34 Eagles turnovers fueled to Pella’s 43-30 victory. Pella Christian Head Coach Kevin Van Maanen feels like the team is in a much more confident state of mind this time, but numerous guards will have to step up to lower the amount of chances given to the girls in green.

“I think [Kaley] Wilson is getting more confident with what she’s doing, and Avery Baugh is coming in and getting more confidence, and I think [Emma] Huisman too–we don’t have the point guard role and she’s more of the two guard role, but she can still handle the ball yet,” he says. “So I think it’s just about getting more confidence.”

The boys game was much closer than the ladies in round one at Pella High School, with the Eagles coming up just short in a second-half comeback in what was a 58-54 Little Dutch victory. Pella Boys Head Coach Derek Schulte is well aware this just isn’t another game for both teams involved after getting that first taste, especially with an Eagles boys team on the other side seeking to snap a four-game losing streak.

“I think if you ask our players, that’s not necessarily true, there is when there is a rivalry to it, there’s a little more intensity, more energy in the gym, but we’ve just got to make sure we don’t let that emotion impact our play,” he says.
