The Pella City Council is holding a special meeting Tuesday, and following regular business, will continue discussion about two long-term projects for the community.

At policy and planning, the council will review seven options for a potential bike trail connecting to Vermeer Corporation along Vermeer Road.

The following are choices the council will discuss:
1. An asphalt overlay and cycle tracks on Vermeer Road from East 8th to 240th — which was brought up at the December 19th meeting and drew numerous concerns from council – Cost: $1.4 to $1.8 million
2. Reconstruction of Vermeer Road, changing it to a city street, with a 10-foot bike path on the south side of the road – Cost: $3.4 million
3. Trail only on Vermeer Road, which would be installed from East 8th to East 13th to the north of Pella schools and the Pella Aquatic Center – Cost: $462,000
4. Trail only on 240th Avenue, with it starting on the northside of University at Madison Elementary and continuing north of the east side of 240th all the way to Vermeer Road – Cost: $332,000
5. Reconstruction of 240th Avenue, including conversion to a city street, with the trail outlined in option 4 – Cost: $2.4 million
6. Extending University Street to Mahaska County Line, including a trail connecting from Madison Elementary to the Pella Sports Park to Vermeer – Cost: $5.6 million
7. Trail Extension to the Pella Sports Park and Vermeer, which involves a trail connecting from Madison Elementary to the sports park to Vermeer – Cost: $660,000

According to the city’s most recent comprehensive plan, the master trail outline shows a connection to Vermeer Corporation through an extension of University Street, however, previous plans have shown the trail to reside along Vermeer Road.

The Pella City Council will also discuss the redevelopment of the Oskaloosa Street Corridor, and in their regular meeting, hear a budget request from a group asking for conversion to a hard surface road on 218th Avenue and Neil Drive and consider a resolution supporting proposed terms for a private housing development agreement by Harvest Investments LLC in the Bos Landen area.
