Legislators at the Iowa Statehouse are weighing options to expand education savings accounts to include K-12 education.

Currently, a bill in the Iowa Senate Education Subcommittee allows parents to save tax-free money to go towards tuition for private K-12 schools, with money coming from what would be allocated if the student were to attend public schools.

Pella Schools Superintendent Greg Ebeling tells KNIA/KRLS News he’s cautious about the measure, and feels like spending new money on students not attending public school will likely draw resources from cash-strapped districts.

State Senator Ken Rozenboom has argued the savings accounts would have no adverse impact on the budgets of public schools. Iowa Republicans, including Rozenboom, have expressed support for the measure.
