Pella Fire and Pella Ambulance simulated a grain bin rescue Saturday afternoon.

Pella Fire Chief Doug Van Gorkom tells KNIA/KRLS News Professional Rescue Innovations brought in a special truck and trailer that allowed numerous firefighters and EMTs to simulate getting stuck in corn and performing a rescue operation.

“It’s always good for us to review all of our rescue efforts, no matter what it is,” he says. “Here again today with grain bin rescue training, it just brought to the forefront some of the things that you kind of not really forget about, but you kind of put on the backburner and being here again refreshes you and makes you sharper when it comes to doing any type of rescue.”

Van Gorkom says they have specialized equipment to use in dangerous situations, including a metal tube to isolate someone trapped and a special auger to pump out corn at a high rate.
