The Simpson Storm women’s and men’s basketball teams swept rival Central last night in a pair of games heard live on our KNIA2 stream, with the women winning 86-58 and the men 96-85.
The Storm women led the entire game but for two minutes of the opening quarter, building a 46-30 halftime lead. In the third quarter, the Storm put the game out of reach outscoring the Dutch 24-11 en route to the blowout win. The Storm had four different scorers lead the team on the night all scoring 11 points, Noreen Morrow, Tori Hazard, Claire Johnson, and Janey Botkins. Emily Dine hit five three pointers to lead the team with 15 points, but Central shot just 34% in the game.
The men’s game had an ugly first half, with neither team finding much scoring as they went into halftime with the Storm up 38-28. Simpson’s Conor Riordan and Central’s Kyle Smith traded baskets as each exploded in the second half, with Riordan going off for 39 total points and Smith for 34, but Central never got the deficit closer than 8 points.
The Simpson women have now won their 34th game in a row over Central to improve to 7-7 in conference play plus clinch an Iowa Conference tournament berth, while the Dutch fall to 2-11. The Storm men improve to 8-6 in the conference, while Central is now 6-7. Simpson has a bye week this Saturday, while Central will host Luther.
