On this week 25 years ago, the Pella Christian basketball program made history.

The 1993 team won its third state championship in four years, often considered one of the greatest runs in Class 2A sports history. That team’s now Hall of Fame Head Coach Jerry Nikkel tells KNIA/KRLS Sports what stands out to him the most about the 1993 squad was its balance and ability to pose multiple threats to the defense.

“Our team was so balanced, and even with the bench people, so balanced that it was hard to prepare for I think,” he says.

The Eagles beat Saint Albert, Co. Bluffs 68-63 in the 1993 title game, after topping Bishop Garrigan, Algona 62-61 in the semifinals.

Tune into KNIA/KRLS all this week to hear Nikkel’s memories from the 1993 Pella Christian championship team as the Iowa High School boys state tournament takes place this week at Wells Fargo Arena.
