A Knoxville man was arrested on domestic violence charges Wednesday night.

According to court documents, the Knoxville Police Department investigated a report of a domestic assault occurring early Wednesday morning, Upon meeting the victim, officers immediately noticed bruising around her neck, and later determined the assailant was 56-year-old Anthony Smith. The victim stated she and Smith had gotten into an argument which escalated to the point of her grabbing a knife to defend herself and Smith putting his hands around her neck and choked her to the point of passing out multiple times before letting go. Smith was charged with domestic assault-choking causing bodily injury and causing willful injury, both class D felonies, harassment in the 1st degree and violation of probation.

Smith’s probation was previously agreed on in a plea deal stemming from an arrest in 2017 on charges of harassment in the 1st degree and assault on a peace officer. The 2017 plea deal involved a 15 year suspended sentence as a habitual offender and three years probation. Smith was also arrested in 2014 for possession of a firearm as a felon, and four counts of forgery and drunk driving in 2015, among numerous other charges.
