Renovation of the historic Sunken Gardens windmill is on hold as the Pella City Council seeks a rebidding of the project.

City Administrator Mike Nardini tells KNIA/KRLS News the city anticipated a cost of just under $150,000 for updating the structure, and at this week’s meeting, council rejected the lone bid of $197,000 that came when they opened the project to contractors.

Nardini says the project’s engineer Klingner and Associates will tweak some of the components of the renovation and extend the construction season in an attempt to attract additional bids to lower the potential cost.

He says if they find a contractor over the next month, renovations to the Sunken Garden windmill may be completed by the end of 2018.
