Pella’s tulips may be slow to show their color this spring.

Pella Historical Society Executive Director Valerie Van Kooten tells KNIA/KRLS News their staff has been monitoring the community’s favorite flowers, and while many are starting to peek out of the ground, it may be a long while before they start blooming.

“I am really thrilled this year that they are just peaking out at this point,” she says. “This time last year it was very warm and they were seven or eight inches tall and I didn’t think we’d have anything left by Tulip Time, but thankfully we had a cold April that held them back.”

“This year, the way the weather has been, I think they’re going to be right at their peak during Tulip Time.”

The City of Pella plans to update the bloom status map by the middle of April, which provides updates about flower beds in various city parks and along streets. Click here for the link to the map and information about the varieties in city beds.
